Using free resources from the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition to reach future builders

Peg Paul discusses free resources from the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition at NFPA's 2015 Fire Sprinkler Initiative Summit in Boston

Celebrating its 20th anniversary next year, the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) has made it its mission to offer free educational resources underscoring the benefits of home fire sprinklers. Such is also the case for educating a new crop of builders via HFSC's Vocational Student Program.

HFSC's Peg Paul underscored this program at NFPA's 2015 Fire Sprinkler Initiative Summit in Boston. Students at technical and vocational schools partner with the local fire departments and sprinkler contractors to understand the ease and necessity of sprinkler installation in new homes. For instance, students help construct a live burn/sprinkler demonstration in accordance with HFSC's free Fire and Sprinkler Burn Demo Kit. Furthermore, they complete a course highlighting sprinkler operation, myths, environmental benefits, "trade-up" options, and a brief tutorial on NFPA 13D, Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes.

This program answers the question, "How do we get sprinklers in the minds of students?" said Paul.
