Tragedy struck the same family twice, when separate fires at a Shawnee, Kansas, home claimed the lives of its members. Local fire service officials spoke to the National Fire Protection Association about both fires, and why these losses underscore the need for home fire sprinkler advocacy. Home fire sprinklers are a life-saving toolHouse Fire in Downtown Salina Controlled by Sprinklers 

The Salina Fire Department credited a sprinkler activation for aiding firefighters during an April 2015 fire in downtown Salina. The fire initiated in a vacant loft apartment above an antique store. All nearby residents and visitors were safely evacuated. "[The sprinkler system] did activate, and that definitely helped our operation," Salina Fire Marshal Roger Williams told the Salina Journal.
